Our Winemakers

About Felix Patland

Felix has been deeply inspired by the world of wine and the unique lifestyle of a winemaker since an early age. He pursued his passion by earning a degree in Wine and Viticulture, with a concentration in Enology, from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Felix's practical education truly began with his first harvest at Titus Vineyards in St. Helena, where he integrated theoretical knowledge with industry practices during his junior year.

Upon graduating from Cal Poly, Felix expanded his experience as an assistant winemaker in the Santa Cruz Mountains at Left Bend Winery, followed by a similar role at Cedergreen Cellars in Washington. These experiences provided him with diverse winemaking perspectives and honed his skills.

Felix eventually returned to California, where he interviewed with Patland Estate Vineyards’ Head Winemaker, Jay Buoncristiani. He was brought on as the assistant winemaker and studied under Jay for five years. During this time, Jay served as an exceptional mentor, imparting invaluable knowledge about producing the distinctive style and quality of Patland wines.

Now, Felix has taken the lead as the head winemaker, with Jay remaining involved as consulting winemaker. We are excited to continue crafting wines of the highest caliber for our guests and members under Felix's expert guidance.

About Jay Buoncristiani

Jay attended Santa Clara University in California and received a Bachelor of Science degree in the combined disciplines of Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. After graduation in 1996 he returned home to the Napa Valley where intense home winemaking coupled with Enologist duties at The Hess Collection Winery fueled a passion for the art and science of wine.

By 1999 at the young age of 24, Jay started the Buoncristiani Family Winery and vineyard management company with his 3 brothers while remaining hands-on in the lab, cellar and vineyards at Hess. From his position as Enologist, at age 26 in 2001 Jay was promoted to Winemaker for the Hess Collection where he remained until the spring of 2005.

From 2005 until present Jay’s winemaking skills have been directed toward his role as winemaker/owner at Buoncristiani as well as hands-on Consulting Winemaker for various labels in the Napa Valley. Jay’s wines have earned high regards from the wine industry’s foremost critics, garnering a multitude of wine scores in the 90s and great achievements such as being named “Rising Star of Napa Cabernet” by the Wine Spectator, # 25 in the Top 100 wines of the world from Wine Enthusiast, and a 97 point rated wine from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate where Parker called Jay’s wine “truly magnificent.”
